3 Things I Have Learned During This Pandemic (and a freebie)

During this pandemic, I have learned 3 things. I shall now bestow my wisdom.

  1. People are stupid. This isn’t a new revelation for me. This is obviously something I have noticed before, but every once in a while it hits me in the head like a two-by-four, and this time it slammed into me like that two-by-four was swung by Babe Ruth going for the bleachers. Kids on the beaches. A no-good-nik (Yiddish-ism) sliding his grocery cart up to someone and saying, “Are you scared of me?” (Answer: Yes, you moron!) Members of government not ordering stay-at-home orders until COVID-19 cases are overwhelming their hospitals. JFC, people, what in the hell is wrong with you?
  2. People work hard. Doctors and nurses, grocery store workers, sanitation employees? Front line troops, and they’re tireless heroes. This is war and they are our army, navy, and air force. Pay them like it and arm them like it, government people. That means give them the money they need, the equipment they need, and do it with the urgency you would give to the military in a war zone. I have friends who have served and they say the same exact thing. Our enemy is invisible, treacherous, and deadly. Treat it with respect.
  3. People are good. I’ve lost count of the number of people who have reached out to me and my family to check on us after I got laid off and again after our dishwasher died and our house flooded. We received some hands on help from some truly kind folks, and a meal sent to us just at the exact moment we needed it. I’ve eaten cake for breakfast and talked to more people on Zoom, Facetime, and Skype than I have in the past year. We’re coping, but we can’t do it alone. We can only do it together.

  2. I love your writing style, and agree with all the lessons you’ve learned. Number one made me laugh. It is so terribly, sadly true.

    We were doing well with Covid numbers in my province, so our premier decided to open everything up. Now the cases are creeping up again, of course. I feel fortunate I can teach from home, because it looks like that will be happening for the foreseeable future.

    So sorry about your lay-off. Hope things pick up for you soon.

    1. Thanks, J.H. Moncrieff. It’s been a learning experience for sure. I’m writing more, which is good, so maybe it is true that when one door closes another one opens? My garden has never looked better. 🙂
