Charlaine Harris Interview! (Part 2, Gunnie Rose)
Charlaine Harris Interview Part 2: I had to discuss Charlaine’s newest series about Lisbeth Rose, a gunslinger for hire. It really is, as her publisher says, The Dark Tower crossed with True Blood.
Lisbeth is a young woman who has a talent for shooting, and she parlays that talent into a career protecting goods or people. Most often, these charges travel across the alternate United States and run into trouble.
Alternate History/Strange Version of the USA
Interestingly, in Lisbeth’s world, the United States fell apart and is now broken up into different sections controlled by different world entities. California is controlled by the former Russian Imperial family. The middle of the country is controlled by Mexico, and New England is British. You get the idea. Creating this new country was, according to Charlaine, “the fun part” of writing these books.
Charlaine Interview Part 2: Setting as Character, Again
Please note, at the start of this clip you hear me say, “You really did that in Gunnie Rose.” I was referring to creating a setting that acts like its own character. The rough terrain where Lisbeth lives, and the refined cityscape of California, place different pressures on Lisbeth as she goes about her job. She’s constantly adjusting and thinking on the fly. Also, she won’t hesitate to kill you if you get in the way.
The Gunnie Rose series is a series of five books. All the Dead Shall Weep, number 5, will come out this September.
