Charles and Anna
I enjoy everything that Patricia Briggs writes, and this book is no exception. And, I love Charles. He is my book boyfriend. Similarly, we know that Anna is a particularly strong character because she is an Omega wolf. However, in many ways this is not their story.
Leah and Bran
While it is an Anna/Charles book, it is even more importantly a Leah/Bran book. This story rounds out Leah as a character and finally, finally, brings closure to the Bran/Leah relationship arc. It answers questions we didn’t know we had, and those we always wondered about why Leah and Bran have the relationship they do, and how it started.
Equally, I loved every, single B plot character. They’re fabulous. I hope we see more of these guys.
Patty’s Having Fun
In the end, my rating is 4.5 stars. I didn’t give it the full 5 stars because I found the main bad guy to be somewhat of a stretch, a bit of a reach. As a result, I had to ask Patty, through her trusty assistant Ann, about the Big Bad’s connection to a real-life person, just to make sure I wasn’t missing something. The response: “This was Patty having fun, keeping it related to art, and possibly foreshadowing that things aren’t always what they seem.”
Which is perfect, quintessential Patty for “I’m not telling you anything, nyyahh nyahhh…” (Insert big, happy, author smile.) Let’s face it, Patty plays with our feelings like a virtuoso violinist.
The Ending
What a fantastic final fight scene! Charles is at his best and Leah and Anna get their swipes in too. After all, there’s nothing better than werewolves being werewolves. They have claws and fangs for a reason and I love it when they use them. And I appreciate that there is always a tiny itsy bitsy mention of the Mercy-verse just to remind us that these storylines are happening at the same time.
Always a great ride. And, if you love Anna and Charles, adore Bran, and wonder about Leah, you need to read this book. The ending tied off a frayed thread. It was a thread I didn’t even know was irritating me, but now that it is tied off, I feel so much better. But, this also sets up what might be coming in the next few books, so I think it is a must-read if we want to understand the entire universe. Remember, everything is linked in Patty’s world.
