Bombshells has been, and may still be, my favorite Dresden Files short story, but Zoo Day, the new story in this collection, is a total treat for Dresden Fans. I use the term Dresden Fans specifically because if you are new to Jim Butcher’s work, it will not be the experience it is for us, long-time fans who have read everything Jim has every written — repeatedly.
Zoo Days gives us a look into a single day in Harry’s life, from Harry’s perspective and then from Maggie’s perspective and then — wait for it — from Mouse’s perspective!!!
“The building was on fire and it wasn’t my fault,” is, without question, one of the best opening lines to a book ever, along with “The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.” (I mean, let’s give Stephen King the props he deserves for The Dark Tower, Book 1. ) But, Mouse’s section of Zoo Day is now my favorite beginning to any short story.
“My name is Mouse and I am a Good Dog. Everyone says so.”
YES! Yes, Mouse you are a Good Dog and we all say so. You are the bestest dog in the whole wide world.
If you are a Dresden Fan, this is a must own, must read, stop everything kinda story, and therefore, one must purchase this book immediately. It is also fun to re-read some of the classics like the Bigfoot stories, and, as I said above, Bombshells, which is worth reading a couple of times just to catch all that is going on there. It is important to the overall story line because you need to know exactly what Molly did to get her sweet digs in the later books.
We should also mention that one of the editors of Bombshells, Gardner Dozois, just passed. If you don’t know who he was, here is a nice piece on Tor.com. https://www.tor.com/2018/05/28/gardner-dozois-in-remembrance/
