A Chat with Erin Casey. Author of the Purple Door District Series.
Hey Erin, What’cha reading?
I’m reading Storm Cursed by Patricia Briggs. It’s one of her Mercy Thompson books.
That is one of my most favorite series. Though, I adore Alpha and Omega too.
You have a solid TikTok presence. What is the silliest thing you’ve ever one on TikTok?
Oh gosh, I’ve done quite a few silly things on Tiktok. Probably the funniest was when I pretended to rush through my door and fall as I came to writers’ aid to the popular “Ding Dong” sound. I’m a natural clutz, so I’ve gotten pretty good at controlled falls. I did the Tiktok in one take and people in the comments loved it but also kept asking if I was okay! It was pretty funny.
That’s hilarious.
Tell us a bit about what you write.
I’ve published urban fantasy books and short stories, but I also write YA fantasy, medieval fantasy, and a little bit of grimdark fantasy.
I just released the third book in my Purple Door District Series called A Game of Fae. It’s the last book in the Chicago trilogy, which follows the journey of parahumans (werebirds, vampires, werewolves, witches, magi, fae, etc) living in safe areas called Purple Door Districts, and their fight against Hunters who seek to destroy them. In A Game of Fae, our beloved characters get trapped in a fighting arena where Hunters pit parahuman against parahuman. It’s up to the Purple Door District to rescue them, but there’s one problem; a vicious dream fae named Vesp protects the pit. The series focuses on the themes of community, found family, and both LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC representation. I’ve hired sensitivity readers to review the books since several of the characters are outside of my demographic. It’s a bittersweet feeling closing the chapter on these characters, but I’ve certainly enjoyed the journey.
As for current WIP, my co-author A.E. Kellar and I are working on writing the main series connected with The Purple Door District. I’m also writing a few anthology pieces which are mostly fantasy and fairytale retellings. One of the anthologies will donate proceeds to Ukraine.
