Excerpt:
I violated my oath about not seeing decomposing bodies the very next day. But, this time, I did it in the name of love.
Sorya called me in to the Medical Examiner’s office. I was happy to hear from her but had hoped for an invitation to go on a date. Maybe a picnic or even dinner in a restaurant. Though I’d long since lost the desire for food, it pleased me to feed her.
“Hi, Waylon.” She stutter-stepped toward me, and I leaned in so we bumped into each other, not quite a hug, definitely not a kiss, but wholly awkward. It had been a while since we’d seen each other, and we’d lost our rhythm.
She cleared her throat as I cast my eyes to the floor, the ceiling, and anywhere but her face. “Well, ah, thanks for coming,” she said, taking a seat in her rolling chair. “It’s good to see you. It’s always good to see you, but you know that, of course. I don’t have to say that, right? I mean, you’ve come here before to look at bodies.” Sorya always moved and spoke like a hummingbird on meth.
“I will always come if you ask.”
She blinked but grinned as well. “Captain Perkins wanted you to examine some bodies. They’re ready.”
“I already looked at them. What’s he want me to see this time?”
She looked away, embarrassed that she’d had to call me at his insistence. “He said he wants you to look again with an open mind.”
“Oh, Sorya, why? Someone or multiple someones killed two men and threw them in the water where they decomposed, as expected, and the eyes are missing. Eyes regularly fall out. What’s the big deal?”
She scrunched her face and gave me a tiny shake of the head. Yeeeah, that hadn’t come out right.
